20% of the sale of each pattern will go to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, a haven for old, sick, or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, old-growth forests, spring-fed ponds and a heated barn for cold winter nights. Gaudeamus
An illuminated page from a gradual (music for the Mass) painted on vellum in tempera. The Latin text reads "Gaudeamus om[ne]s in domino diem festum celebrantes sub honore" meaning "Let us all rejoice in the Lord celebrating a festival in honor of...". A saint's name would follow on the next page. The letter G is decorated with a scene depicting the death of the Virgin, with the crucified Christ, angels, apostles, and others mourning. The four-line musical staff and square notes are a system of musical notation in use in Italy during much of the Middle Ages called Square Neumes. The background is not stitched. Ecru fabric is recommended. (about 1285)

Holiday Candle
A cheery candle burning brightly in a shiny brass holder decorated with holly sprigs and berries. Based on a motif from a vintage Christmas postcard. The background is not stitched, and the pattern is designed for white fabric. (about 1920)
Saint Agatha
Saint Agatha, based on a Greek Orthodox icon. The Greek text, transliterated, says Hagia Agatha (Saint Agatha). Agatha was desired by the Praetor of Sicily, but she refused him and was arrested as a Christian and endured many trials and torture, including having her breasts cut off. She is the patron saint of women with breast cancer, and 20% of the sale of each copy of this pattern will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The background is not stitched. We show it on gold fabric similar to the original icon, but any color may be used.
Isis
A portion of a sarcophagus painting from the 21st dynasty of Egypt featuring the goddess Isis in a feathered headdress, cobras, hawks, a flail, an eye of Horus, and other ancient Egyptian symbols (about 1000 BC)
Earth from Space
Planet Earth and the moon from 22,000 miles out in space. North and South America are seen through light swirling clouds with green lowlands and rocky mountains. The moon is far behind the earth and a few scattered stars can also be seen. This pattern is based on a composite photograph produced from imagery from two satellites. The background is not stitched; use black fabric. The moon and/or stars may be omitted. We also offer a night view. (2000)
Earth from Space at Night
Planet Earth at night from 22,000 miles out in space. Great Britain, Greenland, Iceland, Europe, northern Africa, the Middle East, India, Russia, part of China, and the eastern edge of Canada are seen as an array of lights on deep blue land masses. The background is not stitched; use black fabric. We also offer a daytime view. (2000)
Fetching the Tree
A young boy carrying a small fir tree and a basket of rosy red apples, cookies, and gingerbread through the snow as more large flakes drift down. He is dressed in a red jacket, a striped muffler, black cap, tan corduroy knickerbockers, and gray wool gaiters. He is heading away from a house partially hidden by the snowy hilltop, so perhaps he plans to set up a Christmas tree for the birds and animals. (About 1880)
A Jolly Christmas
A little girl dressed for Christmas in a red spotted dress, white smock, red bow in her hair, and red shoes, holds a black cat against her shoulder. She stands next to a green basket filled with green holly leaves and red berries. Based on a vintage Christmas card, it includes the words "A Jolly Christmas". One, wearing a lavender gown with a fur collar against a red background, is trimming a white tree; the other, in a dark red gown against an off-white background, is trimming a green tree. This pattern can be stitched on red or off-white fabric. If red fabric is used, only the off-white side is stitched, and vice-versa. (About 1925)
Christmas Morning
A little girl in a blue dress sitting on a low stool and happily exploring the contents of shoes filled with Christmas gifts. Her doll is nestled in the crook of her arm as she rummages in the shoe for toys and oranges. She has also hung a stocking from the post of her brass bed and a marionette poking out the top is reaching towards her. A sunny window with potted topiary plants is behind her. (About 1920)
Falconry (detail)
Ornately dressed noblemen and women hunting with falcons. The lead horseman carries a falcon on his wrist and is gazing intently ahead. The man following him is sharing his horse with a lady and is turned to talk to her. A man on foot carries two more falcons. Dogs and more people fill the scene, and the background is of leaves and flowers. This is a small portion of the Falconry tapestry from the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries. (about 1425-1450)
Sunflower Safety Match
A cheerful stylized sunflower from a matchbox. This pattern is charted as solidly stitched, but you may stitch it on ecru fabric and let exposed fabric stand in for the ecru borders, or stitch it on red and let exposed fabric replace the red background around the sunflower. (The red area in the flower is still stitched.) With these options, the requirement for ecru is less than one skein of ecru, or 1 skein of DMC 3328, respectively.
The Garden of Nebamun
A painting from the tomb of Nebamun showing his garden in the afterlife. A pool, shown from above, is full of fish and ducks. It is surrounded by shade and fruit trees. The fruit trees include sycomore-figs, date-palms and dom-palms. A goddess in a tree offers fruit to Nebamun (missing from the fragment). Nebamun Hunting in the Marshes makes a good companion to this. (About 1350 BC)

A tawny cat is hunting birds as well, possibly a pet or a symbol of the sun god. The marsh is full of lotus flowers, tall grass, butterflies, and fish. The Garden of Nebamun makes a good companion to this. (About 1350 BC)
