Raphael
The Sistine Madonna
The Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, standing on a bed of clouds. She is dressed in a red gown with a scarf over her shoulders, a blue over-skirt, and a tan veil over her head. She is glancing down but the adorable baby with tousled hair gazes frankly at us. Kneeling before them are Saint Sixtus (who gives the painting its name) with his papal tiara, and Saint Barbara. All are framed by a pair of green curtains, behind which the faces of angels or souls are dimly seen. Two whimsical putti (baby angels) are also in attendance. See RAP001-D for a chart of just Mary and Jesus, or RAP004 for a chart of the putti. (1513)
The Sistine Madonna (detail)
The Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, standing on a patch of cloud. She is dressed in a red gown with a scarf over her shoulders, a blue over-skirt, and a tan veil over her head. She is glancing down but the adorable baby with tousled hair gazes frankly at us. The background is not stitched; white fabric is recommended. We also offer the full painting. (1513)
Madonna of the Chair
A beautiful, placid Madonna wearing a striped scarf, an ornately striped green shawl over red sleeves, and a blue skirt seated in a chair. She hugs the baby Jesus (in yellow) close to her, and the infant St. John the Baptist leans on her knee in an attitude of prayer. The section outside the circular design is not stitched. White fabric is recommended. (1518)
Putti, Sistine Madonna
Two mischievous putti (baby angels) with russet wings, leaning on their elbows. They are taken from the Sistine Madonna (see RAP001 for the full painting. (1513)
Madonna and Child
Also known as "The Small Cowper Madonna", this very simple and human depiction of the Madonna and Child against a classical Italianate background could be any mother and her baby. The mother, in a red dress with a blue woollen robe across her lap, and a gauzy veil about her head and shoulders, gazes quietly at us, while the active baby clasps her about her neck. (1505)
Portrait of Young Woman with Unicorn
A portrait of a young woman with blonde hair in a red and tan dress and wearing a necklace with a large ruby and teardrop pearl. She is holding a small unicorn on her lap, in medieval romance a symbol of purity. She is seated on a balcony overlooking low hill. For many years this was thought to be a portrait of Saint Catherine because the unicorn had been painted over with a Catherine wheel, but the unicorn was revealed when the painting was restored in the mid-thirties. (1506)
Madonna del Granduca
The Virgin Mary, in a red dress and blue robe, gazing affectionately at baby Jesus who she holds in a sitting position. The name derives from the Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Lorraine who once owned the painting. X-ray analysis has revealed that Raphael originally painted a background with a landscape and architectural elements (as he did with all the other Virgins from this period) and it was painted over later. This pattern is solidly stitched. (1504)
La Donna Velata
A portrait of a beautiful woman, richly dressed, with a veil over her hair, against a dark background. Her dress is white, trimmed with gold, and she has a jewel in her hair and is wearing an amber necklace. (1514-15)
The Alba Madonna
A Madonna wearing a blue robe over a pink gown, seated on the ground in a typically Italian countryside. Baby Jesus is seated on her knee, with the young John the Baptist kneeling next to them. He is holding up a cross which Jesus is grasping. The section outside the circular design is not stitched. White fabric is recommended. (around 1511)

Eric Ravilious
Chalk Paths
A view of the chalk hills of the South Downs in Sussex, England. Paths worn in the thin grass expose the white chalk. A barbed wire fence frames the scene, and the hills seem to fade into the gray sky. (1935)

Rosa Eglanteria var punicea
A botanical print of a glossy single-flowered orange-red rose. The petals are orange beneath, making the buds orange also. White fabric is recommended.

Rosa eglanteria
A botanical print of a glossy yellow single-flowered rose with dark gray-green leaves from Redoute's Les Roses. The background is not stitched. White fabric is recommended. (1817)
Rosa Indica Cruenta
A botanical print of a bright red rose in full bloom from Redoute's Les Roses. The leaves are deep green and smooth-surfaced, with grayish backs, and there are only a few thorns. The background is not stitched. White fabric is recommended.
Hemerocallis Flava
A botanical print of Hemerocallis flava, the yellow daylily or lemon lily, from Redoute's Les Liliacees. It grows wild in much of the world. Each flower opens in the morning and lasts a single day, then drops off if it has not set seed. Here are three open flowers, buds in various stages, a seed pod, and a couple of blunt stem ends where the old flowers have fallen. The background is not stitched. Ecru fabric is recommended. (About 1805-1816)
Rosa Campanulata alba
A botanical print of a branch of beautiful white roses and buds from Redoute's Les Roses. The leaves are medium green and veined, and the stems have large thorns below and are covered with smaller prickles above. The background is not stitched. White fabric is recommended. (1817)
Cypripedium sp.
A botanical print of a Lady's slipper flower. The pouches (slippers) are yellow and the sepals are brown with yellow at their bases. The leaves are deep green, glossy, and ribbed. The background is not stitched. White fabric is recommended. (About 1817)
Viola tricolor
A botanical print of a Viola tricolor. A common European wildflower, it has many nicknames such as heartsease, heart's ease, heart's delight, tickle-my-fancy, Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me, come-and-cuddle-me, three faces in a hood, or love-in-idleness.
There's pansies, that's for thoughts. -- "Hamlet", William Shakespeare

He carries a rifle in a leather case on his saddle. The background is a simple grassy hillside and the sky. (1888)

Luncheon of the Boating Party
Ladies and gentlemen on a river excursion have stopped for lunch at a riverside cafe. They are gathered on a patio with a red-and-white striped canopy surrounded by shrubs and weedy vegetation. Their heavy, formal attire contrasts with the simple light shirts of the boatmen who are sailing the boats for them. Some of the people are engrossed in conversation while others simply observe their companions. (Impressionist, 1881)
Jugglers at the Cirque Fernando
Two little girls in Victorian circus costumes take a bow after their juggling and gymnastics act. They are Francisca and Angelina Wartenberg, daughters of the circus owner. Their costumes, white with gold lace trim, white stockings, and gold boots, contrast with the dark clothing of the partially seen audience. (Impressionist, 1879)

The water is busy with rowboats, sailboats, and swimmers, and ripples catch glints of light. (Impressionist, 1869)
