A small, gas-lit cafe at night. The walls are orange, the ceiling is green, and the floor is of coarse yellow boards. A few people are sitting at the small tables, some talking, others slumped in their seats. A man in a white suit stands at a billiards table in the center of the room. According to Van Gogh, this was a cafe de nuit, open all night. "Night prowlers" could take refuge there when they had no money to pay for a lodging, or were too drunk to be taken in.
