A young couple filling out an application for a marriage license in a dingy county clerk's office. The bride-to-be, dressed in a yellow dress, stands on tiptoe to reach the top of the old rolltop desk, while her fiance looks on. The clerk watches as a tabby cat rubs itself against his chair. The other furnishings are a dusty bookcase, a potbellied stove, and a brass spittoon with cigarette butts littered around it. We also offer a pattern of a detail of the painting showing just the couple. (1955)
