Santa Claus with his white beard and plump red cheeks wearing his now-familiar red suit with wide belt and a red cap trimmed with holly smoking a meerschaum pipe. He wears a pack on his back and in his arms carries a doll, picture books, a watch, a toy sword, wooden horse, and other toys. Nast was the creator of our modern popular idea of Santa. (1881)
