General George Washington crossing the Delaware River for a surprise attack on the Hessians at Trenton on December 25, 1776. Standing next to Washington holding the flag is Lieutenant James Monroe, future President. Seated behind them, with his hand on his hat, is General Edward Hand. The rowers are struggling to push away the thick ice. The actual crossing took place late at night but is depicted here as if at dawn. (1851)
