Ballerinas in white tulle dresses preparing for a class in a large rehearsal room at the Paris Opera with a sanded wood floor. Several large mirrors reflect the dancers practicing at the barre, stretching, and gossiping. An elderly violinist is seated on a piano bench with his back to the grand piano, getting ready to play for the class. His music is standing in his inverted top hat, and the violin case is on the floor nearby. A watering can stands next to the piano for sprinkling the rosin on the floor. This is the very first of all Degas' paintings of ballet dancers. (Impressionist, about 1870)
