Lady Godiva on her legendary ride through Coventry. She had urged her husband to reduce the oppressive taxes to no avail, but finally he agreed providing she would ride naked through the town. She issued a proclamation that everyone should stay indoors, rode through town covered only by her long hair, and the taxes were reduced. She is seated on a richly caparisoned dapple-gray palfrey, with her head modestly bowed, and is passing a stone arched doorway. (Classicist, about 1898)
