Horses being driven or ridden in a circle by wranglers at a country horse fair to show them off to prospective buyers. The horses range from sturdy draft horses with docked tails to shaggy, half-wild horses and half-grown colts, and seem excited and barely under control. The little crowd of observers stands well back - some on a little knoll for a better view. The artist attended a horse fair disguised as a man in order to make her sketches for this painting because women were decidedly not welcome at these events. (Realist, 1855)
