We have a
pattern award this month!
Rachel in Little Rock, Arkansas suggested Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula - Hendrik Hondius (see below), and we've sent her a copy of the pattern. Thank you, Rachel!
Boxes for First Class
We will soon be offering boxes as a packaging option on first class shipments. For shipments within the US, the total weight for first class must be no more than 13 ounces; for shipments outside the US, the total weight can be up to 4 pounds (1.8 kg). (We know your mother told you life isn't always fair.) In practical terms, if you are in the US and ordering 2 or 3 patterns, you may see an envelope but not a box offered as packaging for first class, because the weight of the box puts the total over 13 ounces.
Floss Calculator Enhancements
We've improved our
floss calculator! You can now specify the
number of
strands you are going to stitch with: 1, 2, 4, or 6. Previously the calculator assumed 2 strands (one of each color for blends). If you are using LOW thread count fabric, you may want to stitch with 4 strands (2 of each color for blends), or on HIGH thread count fabric, with 1 (this means you stitch blends one color at a time). You would probably only use 6 strands at a time if you were stitching on needlepoint canvas.
We have also documented the assumptions that are used in calculating the floss. These appear on the printable floss table page that the calculator produces so that you can refer to
them, if you wish, when you're stitching. We assume:
- Floss is always cut in 21" (53 cm)lengths (this gives 15 segments per skein)
- You stitch Danish style (make all / before completing the crosses with the \)
- You do not carry floss over more than 4 skipped stitches
- Starting and ending anchors use 1/2" (1.25 cm) of floss
- You anchor and discard tail when floss is down to 3 1/2" (8.75 cm) long
These are only assumptions, not requirements. You
do not have to stitch this way, but be aware that depending on your technique, you may need a little more or less floss.
