Hints:

The fabric thread count is the number of threads in a linear inch of fabric. Even in metric countries, fabric thread counts are per inch (that’s 2.54 cm). If your fabric is labelled "16-count", for example, just enter 16 as the fabric thread count.

Stitching over 1 or 2: on aida or other coarse weaves you will normally stitch "over one" - each stitch crosses one thread. On linen and finer weaves you will normally stitch "over two".

Threads in the needle: you will usually stitch with an even number of threads (2 for most fabrics), so that, for blended colors, half can be one color and half can be the other. To stitch with 1 strand, you must use two needles and make the / with one color, then make the \ with the other. This is done on very high thread count fabric where there isn't room to stitch with 2 strands.

For needlepoint: If you want to do needlepoint (continental or tent stitch) instead of cross stitch, enter your canvas thread count and the number of threads you will have in the needle (for example, 18 and 6), then figure about 60-70% of the floss needed for cross stitch.
